Thanksgiving

bankruptcy-thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a holiday, but giving thanks is an attitude for life. If you are reading this you have probably had some difficulty in life. It is hard to see the positive things in life when you are going through divorce, bankruptcy or any other challenge. Sure, a divorce can ruin your life, if you let it. Bankruptcy can ruin your life, if you let it. That ability to accept your circumstances with a full heart of appreciation is what will determine whether or not this difficulty will ruin your life or enrich it. That attitude is completely up to you. Giving thanks makes the challenges in life smaller. Giving thanks shows an acceptance and appreciation for an event for which you will be richer and better off for having experienced. The determining factor on this outcome is your attitude toward the situation.

But how can you find gratitude when you do not feel grateful? By making a list of what you do have both on paper and in your mind. Begin listing everything in your life that you DO have. From the extra soap bars under the sink to the spare change in your car console, make a list! From your best friend who is there for you every day to the ability to draw a full breath, make a list! There is so much more going that is good and right than is going wrong, but we often cannot see it when we are in a struggle. At first your list will be hard to start, so begin with the obvious things. Begin with your health or aspects of it that are well. Give thanks for your car and job or coffee you are drinking… start there and build a remarkable list and be amazed when you see how much better things are with proper focus.

Here are some great quotes on thankfulness and gratitude to inspire you this time of year!

“Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough”  ― Oprah Winfrey

“None is more impoverished than the one who has no gratitude. Gratitude is a currency that we can mint for ourselves, and spend without fear of bankruptcy.”  ― Fred De Witt Van Amburgh

“Gratitude is the sign of noble souls.”  ― Aesop

“God gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say thank you.” ― William Arthur Ward

“Gratitude looks to the Past and love to the Present; fear, avarice, lust, and ambition look ahead.” ― C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

“[Gratitude] turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…it makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” ― Melody Beattie

“Happiness is itself a kind of gratitude.” ― Joseph Wood Krutch
