Many faithful Christians arrive at our office after months — sometimes years — of prayer and worry, asking the same question: “Is it a sin to file bankruptcy?” The short answer is no. Scripture never calls bankruptcy a sin, and the principle of debt relief is woven throughout the Bible.

The guilt is real — but it’s often misplaced

Good stewards feel the weight of what they owe. That conscience is a gift. But it can turn into misplaced guilt built on a misconception — the belief that seeking lawful relief somehow wrongs God or your creditors. It doesn’t.

God builds debt release into His law

Far from condemning it, Scripture commands the release of debts: “At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release of debts” (Deuteronomy 15:1–2). The Bible also warns that “the borrower is slave to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7) — describing the very bondage that overwhelming debt creates. Bankruptcy law is, in many ways, the modern embodiment of that biblical “year of release.”

Responsibility and mercy together

Filing bankruptcy is not a way to escape responsibility — it is a lawful, honest way to meet it. A Chapter 13 plan lets you repay what you genuinely can; a Chapter 7 provides release when repayment is no longer possible. Either way the goal is the one Scripture describes: freedom from the bondage of debt so you can give generously again.
